Paju/ Movable Type Workshop
Books made by hand.
Unique place where can make books by movable type under Heaven.
One day I happened to look at a pleasant article on a corner of daily newspaper. Limited edition of one thousand units has been issued for a book of poetry. The reason for limited quantity was very impressive to me. These books ‘hand-made movable type book of poetry’ were printed by lead printing type in Korean paper. So if these are printed unlimitedly, the format worn out and the quality of the printing can not be the same.
On July 2008 from the first issuance of by poet Kun-Bae Lee to on November 2009, total 12 book series of poetry were made by movable type. On February 2009, it was the talk of the town to issue a book of poetry by movable type by poets Nam-Jo Kim and Dal-Ja Shin in relation with teacher and student. For the next 10 year there is planning which books of poetry by 100 poets of medium standing and decease will be issued. These series will be issued in the total printing process from typesetting to printing, binding, and etc. It approached to me more valuable in that it was made by movable type printing and traditional Korean paper.
An acquaintance brought a book of poetry made by movable type printing. I was so lucky to see the precious book. It was something uncommon from neat and quiet cover design. When he turned cover page, there was short phrase with the reader’s name to receive this book. The acquaintance had flushed look with pleasure that he received a gift with his own handwriting by his respect. There was a serial number in all books. It looked like valuable for possession. When touched, I felt fine texture of Korean paper. Whenever pages turned, fragrance from Korean paper like soil smell came out. I opened a page which a poet was written and touched the surface. I felt unevenness. It was not only because movable type printing, but also because specialty of Korean paper. Firm character unique to Korean paper whose color does not disappear with the passage of one thousand year doubled the strong point of movable type printing. We appreciated the book for a while without saying anything because it was such a deep taste of hand-made that we could not feel in these days.
