What does being a workaholic mean? Workaholics are addicted to work. It is all they think about, all that matters in their lives. From the moment they get up until they go to sleep, they cannot help but becoming obsessed with their jobs.

As all addictions, workaholism is harmful for the mind, the body, the family, the social life, and, in this particular case, the job itself. But the damage is reversible, and the key to a better working life is the attitude that people should have towards it.

Many people have the advantage of working on something they love and earn their living by doing it. Some do not have that kind of luck. But even working on something fulfilling and rewarding cannot be enjoyed by becoming irrationally dependent on the job, making it unbearable. Worse than that is when the job is not chosen by them, but the only choice the have and, somehow, it becomes the most important thing in life because they need it to survive. Both situations may end up in a compulsive urge to give more than it can be given in order to succeed.

The problem is usually triggered by an apparent demand of accomplishment in the work place. This is usually realised by the fact that efficiency and responsibility are always required and rewarded. It is always recommended in order to get a promotion or just to keep your job, especially in competitive working environments. Moreover, all jobs have tiring duties and a significant amount of pressure involved. There might be jobs which are more relaxed than others, but they still have deadlines, late-night meetings, heated discussions, difficult decision-making processes, not so easy-going superiors… All these situations may become rather dangerous if the need to overcome them turns into an obsession.

A person may become a workaholic when their working life starts playing a major role over everything else and negatively affects their quality of life. Workaholics work long hours everyday, non stop. Their eating habits are severely altered, since they do not take breaks to eat properly. The exhausting activities they force upon themselves exhaust them and damage their bodies and minds. Consequently, their free time is devoted to recover or, what is worse, by bringing work to the home to make up for the time lost. They find it extremely hard to decompress and cannot enjoy doing anything entertaining. Their families actually miss them, and the only friends they have are co-workers, with whom they can talk about… work.

Frantic working environments and the potentially harmful effects they may have on people can be dealt with more easily by approaching them in a relaxed way. Part of the situation is solved when workaholics realise that, although the job is important, it does not rule their lives. It is said that the better the attitude, the lighter the burden. Changing the attitude towards work will help workaholics improve their quality of life and prevent themselves from neglecting their family and friends and. They need to remember that they are working for a living, not living for working.
