Geography of tourism in Bulgaria

Tourism is the fastest growing sector in the Bulgarian economy with excellent opportunities for foreign investment with high return on investment (ROI). Tourism is one of the key sectors in Bulgaria due to the excellent geographical location, remarkably rich nature, diverse relief and moderate continental climate.

For several decades now, under UNESCO sponsorship, attempts have been made to preserve the planet's most valuable cultural and natural heritage. The UNESCO List of World Heritage now features over 300 landmarks.
Nine Bulgarian wonders - seven cultural and two natural sites - are included among them: Rila Monastery, Nessebur, the Kazanlak Tomb, the Sveshtari Tomb, the Madara Horseman, Boyana Church, the Ivanovo Rock Monasteries, Pirin National Park, and Sreburna Lake.

Tourism has long history in Bulgaria – back to Thracian times. Balneology resorts have the longest history – Greeks and Romans have build castles, fortresses and houses around the hot mineral wells. (The Roman terms in Varna)
During the first and the second BG kingdom – international tourism for education and trading. Bulgaria was under Ottoman yoke for almost 500 years. The only form of tourism was for wealthy people who travelled to Turkish markets.
Turkish leaders also practiced recreation at Bulgarian mineral sources – Sofia, Hisariya, Sandanski.
Big monasteries also played role for keeping the Bulgarian spirit and supporting pilgrimage – Rila monastery, Bachkovo monastery, etc.
