Understanding the source text is an obvious must to correctly translate into the other language.
In working with other translators (and correcting their translations) I could always pinpoint the real reason for a wrong translation to the translator not understanding a WORD in the original language.
In day-to-day life it seems acceptable to not question the use of words ones hears or reads and pretending an understanding. A translator digs his/her own grave if he/she falls into this (seemingly quicker) method of getting over a difficult part of a translation.
Merely finding a translation (as in an English-German) dictionary is not enough. Looking up a word in Wiki or in an English-English dictionary to actually understand the word resolves it. THEN one can pick up the correct translation in an English-German dictionary and understand what one is talking about.
Contrary to common belief this is not only true for technical or specialized words - it is as true for the run-of-the-mill, ordinary word.
