The boys hurried to carry out her instructions. Aleksey, grunting, dragged the groaning gangsters over to the wall. And Vitaly, taking the automatic rifle with him and making sure it was ready to fire, slipped into the passage.
Meanwhile, Kuznetsov was trying to remove Mylnikov’s bulletproof vest. Tamara, getting down on her knees, was helping him. Semyon had already recovered consciousness. And seeing this, Tamara bent down to him and kissed him.
Women are unpredictable creatures. Once more that evening, Tamara’s mood changed radically. She viewed Mylnikov’s behavior as not totally self-sacrificial, but nevertheless brave and sincere. Now she was afraid of losing this man.
“Forgive me, Semyon”, she said. “Please, forgive a stupid woman. Now you really are my knight, my savior!”
Semyon winced.
“That’s enough chatter”, he said with difficulty, as if forcing out the words. “I think I have broken ribs. Take off my bulletproof vest and give it to whoever goes out first to check the situation on the street. There might be more wanting to… give us a spot of bother.”
His sense of humor was returning.
Vitaly emerged from the darkness, carrying a pistol as well as the automatic rifle.
There’s one body there”, he said. “Probably you hit him…” He hesitated, not sure what to call Tamara.
“Don’t be shy, Vitaly, and don’t play the game of these ageing playboys. Just call me Tamara.”
“Princess, what a derogatory description of me and Semyon!”
“Professor, you’re incorrigible. The situation only has to slacken off a little, and you are ready for your witty repartee again. Stop it!”
“It was you who started this game, as you call it, Tamara!” exclaimed Kuznetsov indignantly. “But I’m afraid our adventures aren’t over. Therefore pseudonyms which outsiders don’t know are just what we need. So we’ll keep calling you princess.”
“Fine, I’ve no objection. Especially as I actually am one.”
While saying this, she unbuttoned Semyon’s shirt and was trying to lift his vest. Eventually, she managed it, and saw two huge bruises on his chest. Carefully touching these bruises, she asked: “Does it hurt?”
Mylnikov winced. “Of course it does. I told you, I have broken ribs. You need to bandage my chest tightly, so that I can at least stand up without crying out in pain.”
“Hey, boys, have you got anything that would do as bandages?” shouted Tamara.
“Yes”, replied Vitaly, and crawled over to his bag standing against the wall.
He took out a single bandage pack, and taking Tamara’s place, began skillfully bandaging Mylnikov’s chest.
“You brought a lot of useful things, boys”, said Tamara. “How come, when starting on something like this, you didn’t arm yourselves properly?”
“We didn’t have anything”, cut in Kuznetsov sourly.
“That’s our Russian extremists for you”, said Tamara, grinning. “That’s why the national revolution still hasn’t happened.”
“Never mind, now we’ve got a whole arsenal of guns”, replied Kuznetsov.
Meanwhile, Vitaly had finished bandaging Mylnikov, who shifted to a more comfortable position against the wall.
Once again, as so many times before that day, there had been radical changes in the company. Tamara’s aristocratic gloss seemed to have faded. Now her actions and words were more like those of any woman caught out by her husband in sins which she herself considers grievous, but for which she wants to justify herself to him. It was clear that since Mylnikov had shielded her with his own body, even if he was wearing a bulletproof vest, she had finally become “his woman”.

I held my breath, pressed the bronze handle and carefully pushed on the door to von Zuberbüller’s personal domain. The heavy oak door opened surprisingly easily, with a barely audible creak. I slipped inside, and trying not to make a sound, carefully closed it. I took another step or two and stopped, to allow my madly beating heart to slow down and to carry out a reconnaissance.
While my organism was coping with the massive dose of adrenalin, I went over in my mind the meeting that had ended a few minutes ago in “Daisy Meadow”.
I found it easy to halt the disorderly flight of my forces. But how could I forge them together into a combat-ready unit, a team capable of standing against the Zuberbüller gang, with its mighty brain centre and experienced operatives? A simple recounting of events would certainly not do here. If you want to carry people with you, you must deliver an inspirational and well-thought-out speech. For example, something in the style of Cicero.
Stop. Cicero? My student years floated past in my memory. During my eighth attempt to retake my examination, Zuberbüller forced me to learn by heart several of Cicero’s speeches, the best known ones.
If you woke me up at night and asked me my name, I am not sure that I would be able to answer. But if you asked me to recite Cicero’s speech against Catiline, beginning from the third line of the sixth paragraph, I would begin at once, and not stop till the end.
And I was obliged to Zuberbüller for this ability! Who would have thought it? Prepare yourself, Baron, I am about to turn your own weapon against you. I only need substitute Zuberbüller for Catiline.
While considering the details, I paced up and down in the Daisy Senate, glancing at the audience in the stalls. Two intellectuals, both nerds, who weren’t even in a fit state to fight each other, against two strong and dastardly cutthroats and their partner in crime, the spy-biographer - slim pickings, that’s for sure. But there was no-one else to choose from.
I stopped, and began speaking.
“How long, O Zuberbüller, will you abuse our patience? And for how long will that madness of yours mock us? To what end will your unbridled audacity hurl itself?”
Immediately after the introduction, it became clear that old Cicero really knew his onions. The speech was already a couple of thousand years old, but it still works: the audience still takes it in not only with bated breath, but with respect on their faces. Excellent! I continue:
“Do you not know that your plans have been uncovered? Do you not see that your plans have been rendered powerless by the knowledge of all? O tempora! O mores!”
I broke off here for a significant pause, mentally thanking Cicero, and proceeded from the rhetorical to the specific. First I told them about the conversation in the park and the two thugs, one of whom turned out to be the Baron’s gardener. Then about that business of the mushroom man, whom they had “already sorted out”, about the anonymous note, about the spy-biographer, about the stolen pigs and about the ultimatum to Pasha. And also about the “boss”, ringmaster to this crazy circus, who must surely be Zuberbüller himself.
Pacing up and down the room, I shook them, scared them and amazed them. All along with a liberal dose of facts, theories and versions.
I depicted Anton Sergeyevich as the innocent victim of a frightful plot, only the first of many; Pasha as a decent but naïve young man who had fallen under the fateful influence of Lenochka. Lenochka is charming and cunning, I said, and her intentions towards Pasha could not be described as transparent, but we should not be in a hurry to tar and feather her. My old friend Pasha, I explained, turning to Anton Sergeyevich, may look like an idiot at times, but he is an ingenuous and honest idiot. And if he says that Lenochka has an alibi, then we have to believe him.
