When working as a freelancer, you are not just doing your regular job. You are multitasking. You need to offer your clients the very best of you, and that means performing a great project management, being assertive and having clear accounting reports.
When you started your freelance career, you probably thought it would be easier than actually is. That you will be in the best financial moment of your life and that being a talented professional in your field would be enough. Now you’ve learned freelancing requires so much more than that, and the struggle is real. To be competitive, you need to give more.
Nowadays, indeed, so many other freelancers are as talented as you are. So, it will need a little bit more effort. But, before you regret your decision, take it easy and think that if others can do it, so do you. You just have to really be passionate about your choice. Some skills you may think to start learning:
1. Sales and Branding
You need to start by knowing your strengths and making people believe in you. It’s not about a pretty business card, it’s about sending convincing tenders, showing your work and explain the customer how you will solve his/her problem. Position yourself in a realistic manner and this way you will be able to deliver what you promised.
2. Communication
When it comes to communication, keeping it clear and simple is key. It’s all about getting the message across quickly and effectively. And whatever you do, never assume.
3. Accounting
Even there is more than enough accounting software available, the freelancer generation still needs to turn to accountants to help them understand information like tax codes and deductions, which keeps this an in-demand skill.
4. Customer relationship management
The advantage of being a freelancer is that you have the immediate opportunity to develop a personal relationship with your clients. People connect with people, not businesses. Show your clients you care more about them than their money, and they’ll want to work with you.
5. Time management
One way to maintain focus would be to allocate specific time slots for each project, even going as far as keeping a personal time sheet to record your time on the project. This helps you to monitor your productivity and speed, allowing you to plan your day more effectively.
